Carlos Cardoso's children face legal battle

bullet J. Hanlon (28 December 2001):

PRESIDENT'S SON CONTINUES COURT ACTION
AGAINST CARDOSO'S CHILDREN

Nhimpine Chissano, son of President Joaquim Chissano, continues to demand $78,000 from the minor children of the assassinated editor Carlos Cardoso and from journalist Marcelo Mosse.

The case has been repeatedly postponed, at hearings on 26 November and 17 and 28 December, due to procedural errors by the prosecution. It is now set for 21 January 2001.

Nhimpine Chissano is suing journalist Marcelo Mosse and "Metical" for defamation arising out of articles published in three newspapers in early 2001. The main "Metical" article cited by Nhimpine Chissano was published 22 February, when Mosse was editing the newspaper. Further details of the case are explained in AIM articles below, but Chissano is effectively trying to make "Metical" liable for articles in other newspapers which were written by Mosse or which quote him.

Before he was assassinated, Carlos Cardoso had reported instances of misconduct by Nhimpine Chissano, who took no legal action. But after Cardoso's murder, the President's son has chosen to pursue a legal action against the owners of Metical, Cardoso's 6- and 12-year old children.

In her closing statement in "Metical" on 28 December, Carlos Cardoso's widow Nina Berg wrote: "This is a grotesque injustice. First, Milena and Ibo lose their father, murdered by a terrorist gang. Now they are called to appear as defendants in a court, before their father's assassins are".
